Conservation and restoration laboratory
The activity of this segment of protection arises from the function of the Library as the central institution in the field of protection of library holdings. Hence, the experts – conservators, participate in the adoption and care of properly applying technical safeguards for housing, storage and handling of the library holdings, organize and conduct the conservation and restoration and other works on direct protection of library materials and library goods, perform expertise and assessment of damage to the protected library goods, give professional help to the holders of the library goods, perform professional work in the field of conservation of library goods and other functions regulated by the Law on Protection of Cultural Heritage and Law on Libraries.
Activities
- manual conservation and restoration of handwritten, old-printed, rare and specific library material
- mechanical conservation and restoration with lamination and casting paper pulp
- reparation and conservation with synthetic foils
- cleaning and ironing of parchment and leather covers
- cleaning (dry and wet) materials on paper and parchment
- disinfection and neutralization

Microfilm laboratory
In the activities of this laboratory are included protection with microfilming of handwritten, old-printed, specific and rare material, Macedonian legal deposit and other materials from the Library holdings and other legal and individual entities.

Bookbindery
This is the oldest segment of the protection department of library materials. Since its formation in 1953 up till today, it performs this kind of conservational activities for the needs of the Library itself and other legal and individual entities.
Activities
- hard and paperback covers for handwritten, old-printed, rare, specific and valuable newly received library material
- different types of boxes (with and without cover)
- folders, envelopes, etc.
- mounting canvas and cardboard of various types of materials with different formats
- spiral binding
- cutting, perforation, folding, etc.
